As many as three Dominican friars devoted to anti-heretical preaching were martyred in the diocese of Urgell during the 13th century: Ponç de Planès, Bernat de Travesseres and Pere de la Cadireta. The first two were buried in the cathedral, perhaps originally in Saint Catherine’s Chapel, although we do not have the original tombs, just two wooden urns from the Gothic period (14th C), richly polychromed. On the tomb of Bernat de Travesseres there is a particularly significant image that we reproduce here, showing a dispute between the deceased Dominican, wearing the black-and-white habit characteristic of the order, and a group of Cathars.
