El conjunt de santa Caterina és un exemple tardà però extraordinari de pintura mural romànica catalana. La seva descoberta, darrere d’un retaule barroc, el va treure de l’anonimat però també el va abocar inevitablement a la dispersió pel món del col·leccionisme d’antiguitats. Dividit en tres parts independents, avui aquests fragments es conserven entre el Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (Disputa i arrest de santa Caterina), l’Abegg Stiftung de Suïssa
(Martiri) i el Museu Episcopal de Vic (Sant Sopar).
L’excepcional retrobament de les pintures en aquesta exposició ofereix al públic visitant, per primera vegada des del seu arrencament, l’oportunitat de gaudir del conjunt en la seva totalitat i d’endinsar-se en la història del culte a santa Caterina d’Alexandria,
la seva relació amb les lluites anticàtares de la Seu d’Urgell, la seva filiació estilística i el procediment tècnic del seu arrencament.
L’exposició La princesa sàvia. Les pintures de santa Caterina de la Seu d’Urgell, coorganitzada entre el MEV i el MNAC, s’emmarca dins el projecte de reunió de conjunts dispersos pel món, encetat l’any 2007 amb una primera mostra dedicada al Baldaquí de Tost.La idea de la col·laboració entre ambdós museus va néixer amb la intenció d’unir esforços per oferir un millor coneixement, estudi i difusió de l’art del nostre país, propòsit que encara avui continua amb la mateixa fermesa i idèntica voluntat.
