El conjunto de santa Catalina es un ejemplo tardío aunque extraordinario de pintura mural románica catalana. Su descubrimiento, detrás de un retablo barroco, lo sacó del anonimato pero también lo precipitó inevitablemente a la dispersión por el mundo del coleccionismo de antigüedades. Dividido en tres partes independientes, en la actualidad estos fragmentos se conservan entre el Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (Disputa y arresto de santa Catalina), l’Abegg-Stiftung de Suiza (Martirio) y el Museu Episcopal de Vic (Santa Cena).
El excepcional reencuentro de las pinturas en esta exposición ofrece al público visitante, por primera vez desde su arrancamiento, la oportunidad de disfrutar del conjunto en su totalidad y de adentrarse en la historia del culto a santa Catalina de Alejandría, su relación con las luchas anticátaras de la Seu d’Urgell, su filiación estilística y el procedimiento técnico de su arrancamiento.
La exposición La princesa sabia. Las pinturas de santa Catalina de la Seu d’Urgell, coorganizada entre el MEV y el MNAC, se enmarca en el proyecto de reunión de conjuntos dispersos por el mundo, iniciado en el año 2007 con una primera muestra dedicada al Baldaquino de Tost. La idea de colaboración entre ambos museos nació con la intención de unir esfuerzos para ofrecer un mejor conocimiento, estudio y difusión del arte de nuestro país, propósito que aun hoy continúa con la misma firmeza e idéntica voluntad.
